Symbols across halls

Each symbol is three things: the image in the story, the part of a person it names, and the change it files in the body. Follow one across halls. Never explain the last thread.

Letter / nineteen messages

Metaphor
Nineteen undelivered messages. An envelope put down. A tin that holds what was too expensive to send.
To the person
The part that cannot speak unless a reply is guaranteed, and so either does not speak or speaks nineteen times.
How it generates change
Presence without guaranteed return. The unreplied test. One message, then the tin. Want stays. Arranging leaves.
Eight Days
  • Nineteen letters travel into a weather that was never a chessboard.
The Recurring Day
  • Nineteen letters rest in a tin and do not swim.
