Symbols across halls

Each symbol is three things: the image in the story, the part of a person it names, and the change it files in the body. Follow one across halls. Never explain the last thread.

Brass / plate / sphere / dripping

Metaphor
An unmarked plate. Water onto metal as a clock. A sphere holding one still drop.
To the person
The part that needs a floor number, a label, a trick, before it will ride the elevator.
How it generates change
The express car is behind an unmarked door you have walked past for years. Dripping on brass is enough clock. Physics, not a trick, holds the drop.
The Hundredth Floor
  • The brass plate never needed a number.
  • Water onto brass is a clock that does not hurry.
The Man Who Sold His Own Furniture
  • A brass sphere holds one still drop.
